The longer option is a three-hour expedition with a biologist, from €59. These leave from Lagoa rather than Portimão, and one of them adds the Ponta da Piedade headland. Choose them if you would rather have time at sea than a quick loop.
Families with younger children may prefer a biologist cruise, since someone on board explains what the children are looking for. Photographers and impatient travellers tend to prefer a small-group speedboat.
Several cards combine dolphins with the Benagil Caves, so less of the trip goes on searching for dolphins. Read the description to see what the focus is, and look at the number of reviews, not only the stars: one tour shows 3.1 from nine ratings, while two others have well over a thousand.
Good to know: These are wild animals, so nobody can promise a sighting. Most operators offer a free second trip if you see nothing – check that before you book.

Take the biologist boat if you want to understand what you are watching or travel with children; those trips run about 2 h 30 min. Pick a speedboat if you like moving fast and sitting close to the water. Biologist cruises start from €32 per person, speedboat trips from €35.
Not every trip suits everyone. A shorter outing of 1 h 30 min limits the time you spend rocking, and a larger boat usually moves more steadily than a small speedboat. These tours head into open water, so ask the operator how the boat copes with swell and whether you can rebook if the sea looks rough.
Two of the three-hour expeditions list Lagoa as their starting point, and one of them also offers views of Ponta da Piedade. The meeting point is shown on the booking page, so compare it with where you are staying before you pay, and allow plenty of time to get there.
