They suit people who want a boat ride as well, but the outing is longer and costs more than a beach start.
Couples and photographers should look at the sunrise or sunset departures, when low light flatters the cliffs and the groups are small. If crowds put you off, the tour from Fontainhas Beach is limited to four kayaks and heads for caves beyond Benagil. A solar-powered boat from Portimão is the alternative for anyone who would rather not kayak: it offers swimming, snorkelling and paddleboarding, but it is a cruise rather than a cave kayak tour.
Before you book, check the meeting point, whether lockers are provided, and what fitness the operator expects. Ask which time of day is usually calmest.
