Portimão, Albufeira or Lagos – where to start your boat trip

Updated August 1, 2026 · 5 min read

Almost every boat trip on the central Algarve ends up at the same handful of caves. What changes is where you get on the boat — and that decision affects your price, how long you sit in transit, and how much time you actually spend at the good bits. Here is the honest comparison.

The geography that decides everything

The famous stretch of coast — Benagil, Praia da Marinha, the arches and the hidden beaches — sits roughly between Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra. Every marina is measured by how far it is from that stretch.

Portimão sits just west of it, about 15 minutes by boat. Lagos is considerably further west, around 40 minutes. Albufeira is east, about 25 to 30 minutes. Vilamoura is furthest east, 40 minutes or more.

That difference is not trivial. On a 90-minute tour, a 40-minute transit each way leaves you almost nothing at the caves.

Portimão

Transit to Benagil: ~15 min · Typical price: €14–40 · Best for: most people

Portimão Marina is the closest major departure point to the cave coast, and it has the highest density of operators, which keeps prices competitive. The 90-minute cave tours here genuinely spend most of their time among the caves rather than getting there.

The marina is easy: large paid car park, plenty of cafés, and a five-minute walk from Praia da Rocha where a lot of visitors are staying anyway. If you are based anywhere between Lagos and Carvoeiro, this is your default choice.

The one drawback: it is busy in July and August, and the morning slots sell out first.

Albufeira

Transit to Benagil: ~25–30 min · Typical price: €20–50 · Best for: people staying in Albufeira

Albufeira has more boats than anywhere else on the coast, but most of them are pointed at the local caves and beaches rather than Benagil. Tours that do go to Benagil are usually longer and around €5–10 more expensive than the equivalent from Portimão, simply because they have to cover more water.

If you are staying in Albufeira, the extra cost is fair — you save an hour of driving. If you are not, there is no reason to start here.

Lagos

Transit to Benagil: ~40 min · Typical price: €15–45 · Best for: Ponta da Piedade, not Benagil

Here is the thing most guides get wrong: Lagos is a poor choice for Benagil, but an excellent choice for something else entirely. Ponta da Piedade — the cluster of golden arches and grottoes right outside Lagos — is arguably more spectacular than Benagil and far less crowded, and the small grotto boats there cost around €15 for 45 minutes.

If you are staying in Lagos, do Ponta da Piedade locally and drive to Portimão if you also want Benagil. It is a 25-minute drive.

Vilamoura

Transit to Benagil: 40+ min · Typical price: €35–60 · Best for: people already in Vilamoura

The most expensive option, with the longest transit. The marina is beautiful and the boats tend to be larger and more comfortable, but you are paying for fuel and time. Only sensible if you are staying nearby.

Two practical notes

Do not judge a tour by its length. A two-hour trip from Vilamoura may give you less cave time than a 90-minute trip from Portimão. Read the itinerary, not the duration.

Parking is part of the calculation. Portimão Marina and Albufeira both have large paid car parks that fill up by mid-morning in August. Arriving 20 minutes early is not optional in high season.
