Speedboat Cave Tour from Portimão: What the €12.49 Tour Really Offers

With 8,880 reviews and 4.8 stars, the “Benagil Sea Caves Speedboat Adventure Tour” is the second most-reviewed boat trip from Portimão. The operator’s page promises adrenaline and the famous cave. What it leaves out, we’ve gathered from the booking page and recent reviews.
Price, duration and what isn’t included
The tour costs €12.49 per person and is listed at 1 hr 30 min, with free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance. Included are the boat trip and safety equipment. Not included: hotel pickup, food, drinks – and a swim stop.
Your actual time commitment is longer: one review advises arriving half an hour early, and the review summary on the booking page mentions check-in waits with no shade. Conversely, one guest reports the trip lasted only an hour – the operator apologised for it. Plan on around two hours from arrival.
Meeting point, operator and language
According to the booking page, the meeting point is next to the ruins of the São Francisco monastery in Portimão, at the Atlantis Tours stand (listed on GetYourGuide as P4YServices). The tour also ends there. After a short safety briefing, you get a life jacket. According to one review, parking is easy and free. Luggage, large bags and pets aren’t allowed.
Important: the guide speaks English, French, Portuguese and Spanish, but not German. That matters, because almost every review praises the commentary – coastal history, tips, jokes. One guest writes, though, that engine noise made it hard to catch everything.
The boat: open, cramped, fast
The booking page only mentions a “brand-new speedboat”. It doesn’t state the boat type, number of seats or shade. Guests describe the boat as stable, big enough for a smooth ride and small enough for the caves. You see less from the middle seats than from the edge. Two guests found the seats uncomfortable towards the end, one also called them cramped. Nobody mentions shade on board – bring sun protection.
The operator doesn’t state a speed but advertises a fast ride over the waves. How rough that gets depends on the swell: one guest praises how the skipper handled choppy water, another had calm seas in the morning. The route: more coastline than Benagil
The itinerary on the booking page runs east from Portimão: past Ferragudo with its castle, to Paradise Cave, on to Carvoeiro and Algar Seco, along the Alfanzina lighthouse and Praia do Carvalho, to Benagil Cave and Benagil beach, then back. Guests count “six caves” or “eight to ten”; several write that they sailed into caves.
That’s not guaranteed: according to the booking page, swell can prevent entry, and the skipper and maritime authorities decide. Nobody may get out inside the caves. One guest didn’t get into Benagil Cave because of wind.
Incidentally, Praia da Marinha isn’t on the route – unlike the two €12.38 tours further down.
The two minutes at Benagil Cave
Motorboats may only enter through the west entrance, stay a maximum of two minutes, with a maximum of five boats at a time. Landing is banned for everyone. In high season that means waiting in front of the entrance – one guest writes of a “fairly long wait” in August, another of a short one. Who the tour isn’t for
According to the booking page, it isn’t suitable for pregnant women, people with back or heart problems, or wheelchair users – check the current page before booking. The booking page doesn’t state a minimum age; operators set different limits, so ask if in doubt.
It also makes little sense if you’re expecting commentary in German, a swim stop or dolphins – sightings aren’t guaranteed, according to the operator.
Against the equally cheap and the pricier tours

The two €12.38 tours are eleven cents cheaper, the same length and rated just as well. Both name Praia da Marinha in the title, and rank 1 also has a sunset option. This tour, in return, describes the stretch from Ferragudo to Benagil in detail. Decide based on departure time and whether Marinha matters to you – price doesn’t decide anything here.
With the pricier tours, you mainly pay for time: rank 8 costs almost three times as much for half an hour more. Rank 13 is the only one with dolphin search in the title, but at 4.4 stars it has the weakest rating in the group. Anyone specifically wanting to see dolphins should look at dolphin watching (13 offers from €30). Conclusion
For €12.49 you get ninety minutes of coastline from Ferragudo to Benagil, several caves if the sea cooperates, and commentary that’s praised almost unanimously – in English. No swim stop, no Marinha. Anyone who can sit without back problems and doesn’t need German won’t go far wrong.
