Sunset on the Algarve – departure times month by month

The Algarve coast faces south and west. In the last hour before sunset the cliffs turn copper, and the water is the best place to see it. That is why sunset trips are so popular here.
The question is: when exactly does the sun set? Between December and June that shifts by almost four hours. Anyone looking for an 8 p.m. departure in October will not find one.

These are approximate values for Portimão. The exact time changes by a minute or two every day.
The clock-change trap
Twice a year the departure time jumps by a full hour:
End of March the clocks go forward. Sunset slides from about 18:50 to 19:55.
End of October they go back. 19:05 becomes 18:00.
If you book in those weeks, look carefully. It is the most common reason people stand on the pier an hour early or an hour late.
Why departure is so early
Boats usually leave 60 to 90 minutes before sunset. There is a reason: the finest hour is not the moment the sun touches the horizon but the time before, when the light warms and the cliffs begin to glow.
Reaching the coast takes 20 to 40 minutes depending on the route. Leave at sunset and you will watch it from the harbour basin.
Which month suits best
May, June and September are the strongest months. Long evenings, warm light, mostly calm seas, and it stays pleasantly mild after dark.
July and August have the latest sunsets but also the fullest boats and the highest prices. If you go then, book early.
October and April are underrated. Softer light, emptier boats, lower prices. Bring a jacket.
November to February is the quietest stretch. Sunset already in the late afternoon, but often more dramatic clouds. Fewer boats run, and more trips are cancelled because of swell.
What to bring
On the water it gets noticeably cooler after sunset than on land – even in high summer. A light jacket belongs on every evening trip, even if you spent the afternoon on the beach in a t-shirt.
Also: most sunset trips include a drink, often sparkling wine. If you want more, ask beforehand – there is rarely anything to buy on board afterwards.
Which trip
The classic version runs along the coast to the Benagil cave and back, with a glass on board. These sunset cruises start at around €11.50 and last about 1.5 hours.
If you prefer it steadier, take a catamaran – it sits more stable and has more deck to sit on. For something more romantic, look at the sailing trips: under sail it is quiet, and that quiet is what makes the evening.
One last note
Do not rely on this table alone when timing is tight. Always check the exact time on the booking page. Operators adjust departures to the actual position of the sun, and some push them back another fifteen minutes in high summer.
And as with every tour here: almost all can be cancelled free up to 24 hours ahead. On an overcast day it is worth postponing – a sunset behind a closed cloud deck is just an early evening.
