Kayak or boat into the Benagil cave – which suits you?

Since the 2024 rules, anyone wanting inside the Benagil cave has exactly two options: a guided boat tour or a guided kayak tour. Both get you in. But the experience differs enough that the choice shapes your whole day.
The key difference: time
This is the number that decides everything else.

Two minutes is shorter than it sounds. The boat enters, slows, everyone takes photos, and it turns around. Enough for a first impression – barely enough for an experience.
Eight minutes is four times that. You drift in the kayak, hear the echo, watch the light move through the ceiling opening. That is a different visit.
The case for the boat
It is considerably cheaper. From around €12 against €27 for the kayak.
You see more coastline. Boat trips typically pass ten to twenty caves and coves, not just Benagil. If you want the coast as a whole, the boat is right.
No effort. You sit and look. In heat, with small children or with limited mobility, that is often the only workable option.
Less weather-dependent. Motorboats run in conditions where kayak tours have long been cancelled.
Shorter. Ninety minutes rather than three hours.
The case for the kayak
Four times as long inside. The main reason.
You reach caves boats cannot. Along the coast there are clefts and small grottoes only a kayak fits into. Some tours build their whole programme around exactly that.
It is quieter. No engine, no twenty fellow passengers on the same deck.
Small groups. Six people per guide is the rule. On a boat you sit with considerably more.
You are in the water, not above it. Most tours include a swimming stop.
When a kayak is a bad idea
Honestly, so you are not disappointed:
In wind. Kayak tours are cancelled more often than boat tours. If you are only around for two days, plan the boat or keep a spare day.
With small children. Most operators set a minimum age, often six to eight. Ask beforehand.
In serious heat. Two to three hours of paddling in the midday sun is harder than it sounds. Early tours are kinder.
If you want to see the coast. A kayak does not get far. To reach Praia da Marinha you need the boat.
What you do not need: experience. The briefing happens on the beach and guides come along. Basic fitness is enough.
The middle option
Some tours combine both: by boat to the coast, switch to a kayak for the caves, then back. They cost more than either alone but remove the compromise.
If time matters more than money, this is often the best call. Look for these under kayak tours, usually advertised as “boat and kayak”.
The decision
Take the boat if: time is short, you travel with small children, you want the whole coast, price matters, or the wind forecast is uncertain.
Take the kayak if: the cave itself is the goal, you want eight minutes rather than two, you prefer small groups, and you have a spare day.
Take the combination if: you want both and the surcharge fits.
Two things that apply to both
Go early. The first departure of the day reaches Benagil without a queue outside. By late morning several boats wait at once.
