Minimum Age on Boat Tours – Which Boat From What Age

There is no single minimum age for boat tours in the Algarve. That is the honest answer, and it is unsatisfying, because it makes planning harder. Operators set their own limits, those limits differ from boat to boat, and the same company can quote two different numbers for two of its own tours.

What can be said is this: the limit almost never depends on age alone, it depends on the type of boat. Once you know the pattern, you know where to look before you book.

The pattern in one sentence

The smaller and faster the boat, the higher the age limit. The bigger and slower, the lower. Anyone who has to paddle has to be older than someone who simply sits.

Large boats and catamarans – the lowest threshold

On the big excursion boats and catamarans the limits are loosest. Many operators take children from around two without further discussion, some take babies too — although a baby almost always counts as a person and has to be entered in the booking, even when it travels free and sits on a lap.

The reason is straightforward: these boats are stable, they have benches with backs, often a sun canopy and usually a toilet. You can stand up, move around and carry a grizzling child without it becoming dangerous.

The catch: two and a half hours is a long time for a three-year-old. A low age limit does not mean the tour suits the child.

Speedboats and RIBs – the strictest rules

Here it tightens considerably. Speedboats sit low, slam into the swell, the seats are hard, you get sprayed, and you have to stay seated and holding on for the whole trip. Many operators exclude children under three, and some set the bar higher.

The same boats routinely exclude pregnant passengers and people with back problems — that is usually in the fine print, and it is meant seriously.

Kayak – usually from four to six

Kayak tours generally set the limit at four to six years, a few operators only from eight. The child does not paddle: double kayaks often have a small middle seat where a child rides between two adults.

SUP – the highest limit

Stand-up paddleboarding is the strictest category, for a practical reason: everyone needs their own board. You cannot bring a child who cannot stand, balance and climb back on unaided. Operators here commonly state eleven and up.

Combination tours that offer kayak and SUP together and advertise “from age 3” almost always mean the kayak part — the small child sits in the parents’ boat and does not paddle.

Private boats – the only tour without someone else’s rules

If none of the age limits fit, the private charter remains. It is the only option where departure time, duration and the decision to stop belong to you: if the child has had enough after forty minutes, the boat turns back and nobody is annoyed.

What you actually have to check on the booking page

Four points, and all four are there:

1. The stated age itself. It sits under “Important information” or “Not suitable for”. If nothing is stated, that does not mean all ages are welcome — it means you ask before booking.
2. Whether the baby counts as a person. Very often yes, even when travelling free. Miss this and you arrive at the quay with a booking that is one place short.
3. The duration. An hour and a half and two and a half hours are two completely different undertakings with a three-year-old.
4. Life jackets in children’s sizes. They are common on excursion boats, but not universal and not in every size. Ask specifically about the size for your child rather than assuming it.

When it is a bad idea

• When the child has never been on a boat and the tour runs two and a half hours. Start shorter. A sunset cruise from €11.49 over 75 minutes is the cheaper trial run.
• In strong wind. If the operator mentions rough seas in the morning, that is not a sales tactic. On the Algarve the wind picks up in the afternoon almost daily — the first departure is the calmest.
• When the cave is the only reason. There are days when boats cannot go in because of the swell. Book solely for that and you are booking a possible disappointment.
