Taking a rental car from the Algarve to Spain: what to settle first
Updated September 1, 2026 · 7 min read
Portimão to Seville is a good three hours; to Ayamonte, barely two. Both countries are in the Schengen area and nobody stands at the border any more. That is exactly the trap: because you can simply drive through, you assume you are allowed to. The rental contract sees it differently.
The one sentence that decides everything
Almost all suppliers permit trips to Spain — but only if you declare them in advance. Cross the border without declaring it and you generally lose your entire cover. Not just for Spain: for the whole rental.
It is the most expensive mistake you can make with a hire car in the Algarve, and it happens constantly, because it does not feel like a mistake.
Declare the trip when you book, not at the counter. At the counter it can be refused, and then you are standing there with a car you cannot use as planned.
What it adds
A fee. Most companies charge for cross-border authorisation, ranging from a few dozen to well over a hundred euros depending on the supplier. It is charged once, not per day.
A larger deposit. Many suppliers increase the hold on your credit card once cross-border use is authorised, often by several hundred euros. If your limit is tight, allow for it.
Vehicle classes drop out. Convertibles, larger SUVs and premium categories are frequently excluded from cross-border authorisation, or carry a much higher deposit. If the Spain trip is certain, choose the car accordingly.
Get it in writing. Have the authorisation documented and check on return that it appears in the return record too. It happens that the fee is charged twice because it was noted at pickup but never linked.
What is not the problem
The third-party liability insurance on a Portuguese hire car is valid in Spain — that is settled EU-wide and has never been the difficulty. What is missing if you did not declare is the damage side: theft, damage, roadside assistance.
The border itself is unproblematic too. At Ayamonte you cross the bridge and you are there. Carrying ID is required; checks are rare.
Tolls in Portugal
Portugal runs two systems side by side: conventional motorways with booths, where you pay cash or by card, and purely electronic stretches with nowhere to stop at all. There, camera gantries photograph the plate at full speed and you are billed afterwards.
Good news for the Algarve: the A22, the coastal motorway between Lagos and the Spanish border, has been toll-free since the beginning of 2025. That was long otherwise, and older guidebooks still have it wrong.
Not for the run to Lisbon: the A2 remains tolled.
Hire cars in Portugal are as a rule fitted with an electronic toll device. Ask two things at pickup: whether a daily fee applies for the device, and whether that fee is capped. The tolls themselves then appear automatically on the final invoice.
One mistake carries its own fine: using the Via Verde lane at a manned toll plaza without an active device. If you are unsure whether yours is active, take the normal lane.
Is the trip worth it?
Honestly: for a single day, rarely. Ayamonte and Isla Cristina are pleasant but not why anyone comes to the Algarve. Seville is magnificent and needs at least one overnight — as a day trip it is six hours of driving and four hours of city.
If cross-border is booked anyway because you are flying home from Seville, that is a different calculation. Otherwise I would put the money into a boat trip to the caves that leaves twenty minutes away.
Before you book
When you compare car hire for the Algarve, look for the cross-border line — it sits in the terms, not in the price. And note: returning the car in Spain is an entirely different thing from a day trip. That is a one-way rental and costs a multiple.

What the insurance otherwise covers is in Car hire excess; the rules on fuel and second drivers are in Fuel policy and extra drivers.
