When to see dolphins in the Algarve – month by month

Dolphins live off the Algarve coast all year round, which is why almost every operator can advertise a sighting rate above ninety per cent. That number is true, but it hides the part that actually matters to you: some departures are far better than others, and the difference is bigger than the difference between months.
Which dolphins you are likely to see
Three species turn up regularly on this stretch of coast. Common dolphins travel in large, fast pods and are the ones most often seen from Portimão — groups of twenty or more are normal. Bottlenose dolphins are bigger, slower and more curious, and they are the ones that come to ride the bow wave. Striped dolphins stay further offshore and show up mainly on longer trips.
Once or twice a season, boats also encounter minke whales or sunfish. That is luck, not planning.
Month by month
April to June is the quiet favourite. The water is calm, the pods are active and feeding, and the boats are half empty compared to midsummer. Sighting rates are at their annual high. The only downside is that the Atlantic is cold if you were hoping to swim.
July and August have the most departures and the most reliable weather, but also the most boat traffic. Pods get followed by several vessels at once, which shortens the time any single boat spends with them. Book the earliest departure of the day and you avoid most of this.
September and October are arguably the best compromise: warm water, thinner crowds, and pods that are still very active. Locals will tell you September is the best month on this coast, and for dolphin trips they are right.
November to March still has dolphins, but far fewer departures and many more weather cancellations. If you are here in winter, treat a dolphin trip as a bonus rather than a plan.
Time of day beats time of year
This is the part most guides skip. Morning departures — the first one or two of the day — consistently outperform afternoon trips, for reasons that have nothing to do with the dolphins themselves.
The sea is flatter before midday, which means the crew can spot dorsal fins from much further away. Fewer boats are out, so pods have not yet been followed for hours and are less likely to move away. And the light is better for photographs.
If you can only do one trip, make it a morning one.
How to read a sighting guarantee
Most operators promise a free second trip if you see no dolphins. Read the conditions before you assume it helps you: the free trip usually has to be taken within your stay, and in high season the free slots are the leftovers, not the good morning ones. It is a genuine offer, but it works best if you go out early in your holiday rather than on your last day.
Nobody can guarantee a sighting. These are wild animals in open water, they are not fed and they are not tracked. Any operator promising certainty is overselling.
Practical notes
Bring a windproof jacket even in August — the boats are fast and the spray is cold. Motion sickness tablets are worth taking half an hour before departure if you are at all prone to it; the Atlantic swell is different from the Mediterranean. And keep the phone in a waterproof pouch rather than your hand, because the good sightings always happen when the boat turns sharply.
